Match Report

Yet another cracking game on The Head at Tonbridge School which almost resulted in the second tie in the last few years. The Yellowhammers scored the winning run with nine wickets down off the last ball!

Having lost the toss and been inserted the Martlets got off to a flyer with Tawanda Muyeye (Wisden Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year 2020) scoring 43 off 43 balls with 7 fours and 1 six. At the halfway mark the Martlets collapsed to 79-6 after 20 overs but thanks to the lower order led by Joe Akers-Douglas 47 off 40 balls including 6 fours and 3 sixes, and Alex Wingfield Digby (26) plus Matt Barham and Phillip Ellwood helping us post 183-8 from the 40 overs.

In reply Ben Twine (4/23) and Derek Horsham (3/33) bowled a supreme opening spell which left the Yellowhammers 63-5 after 15 overs. Their sixth wicket then recovered the innings to put on 105. Defending the low total looked a challenge but tight bowling from Matt Barham, Ben Twine and Joe Pocklington meant the game went to the final over and final ball! Tawanda almost made it happen with a wicket off the second ball of the last over after Ben had taken a wicket in the 39th over, leaving the Yellowhammers 9 down. With scores tied with two balls to go a brilliant yorker meant all results were possible for the final ball of the match. Unfortunately for the Martlets their no11 played a cracking shot through the covers to take the result this year.

Great hosting as always by the Yellowhammers and very grateful for them working so hard to ge the fixture and their cricket week running in addition to the schools effort on their glorious ground. David Walsh (YH president) have a small presentation and huge thanks to Tonbridge School Director of Grounds from who retires shortly after 28 years service and has certainly produced great wickets for this game every year.
