| On a fine, dry day at the Army Golf Club a large turnout of Sussex Martlet golfers, superbly marshalled by Nigel Russell, turned out to honour the memory of the incomparable Willie Bicket.
The day was supported not just by the Martlets, but by representatives of the many clubs with which Willie enjoyed an association. On the course, and in keeping with the venue, the Martlet pairing of Stuart Richie and Robert Forster stormed the front nine before retrenching on the back nine and returning a match winning score of 38 points. At a curry lunch in keeping with Willie’s service association with Asia, Dame Penelope Keith presented the prizes. She had worked closely with Willie in his post-services role with the Actors Benevolent Fund. There followed a most poignant tribute to Willie by his son, Hamish. All left the venue pleased that the event had been such a wonderful tribute to a competitive cricketer and engaging and likeable man who we were lucky to be able to call a Martlet and a friend.
