Sussex Martlets Golfing Society
Match v West Sussex Golf Club
2nd April 2023
|In our regular team captain’s absence it was my privilege to take the over the reigns from Mark Bowden for this fixture. My thanks go to Mark for trusting me with being at the helm for the day and to the team for keeping their laughter at the prospect reasonably private!
The day was blessed with decent weather and sufficient numbers to make up a full quotient of sixteen players per team.
The morning was notable for the Martlets coming out of the blocks well and quickly finding their stride. West Sussex fought valiantly but could only restrict the Martlets to a well above expectations 6-2 advantage at the halfway stage.
As all Martlets Golfing Society members will be aware, lunch is a very important and integral part of the day’s proceedings. I rather fear that on this occasion a little too much enthusiasm for the fine food and drinks laid on by West Sussex, was exhibited by the Martlets players and this was reflected in the afternoon scores.
My opposite number, Nigel Jupp, rallied the troops and led a mesmerising comeback by West Sussex in the afternoon games. Thankfully, (or luckily, depending upon your viewpoint), the Martlets somehow managed to cling on and win by a single point with the overall score being 8.5 to 7.5 in the Martlets favour.
So, in summary, a narrow margin of victory for the Martlets but, more importantly, a wonderful days golf and fun with friends (both old and new) was had by all.
