A Martlet “first” took place on Sunday 10th August at Fletching with a Twenty20 festival consisting of two Martlet sides, one being provided by the Juniors, Fletching CC and the Griffin CC. In the opening semi-final Fletching were bowled out for 82 in 18.4 overs by the Martlets with Nick Creed taking 4-10 and Swampy Allum 3-11. In reply the Martlets reached their target in 14.4 overs for the loss of 6 wickets (Tom Lucas 3-13 and Matt Lucas 2-19). The second semi-final produced a nail biter going down to the last ball. The Juniors scored 138-9 in their 20 overs with some good solid batting from Alasdair Wilson (27), Andrew Hartridge (27) Felix Jordan (22) and Rifath Haque (20). Needing just one run to tie the match off the last ball, Griffin batsman Andy Cole popped a catch up to mid wicket and the Juniors won by 1 run. The final emerged as a bit one sided with the Martlets posting 155-4 (Ed McGregor 53, William Ross 36 and Patrick Jackson 33) and the Juniors faltering in reply at 102 all out in 18.3 overs. Alasdair Wilson again scored well for his 46 and for the Martlets Swampy Allum returned 3-4 with Patrick Goodwin and Sandy Ross each snatching two victims.
We have trialled a good format for the day, superbly hosted by Fletching, and left ourselves plenty of room for development of what will surely become an exciting day in the Martlet calendar for years ahead.
