Match Report
| This was a special occasion, as we were playing for the inaugural Ham Whitty Memorial Cup, presented by Ham’s wife Mary. We were honoured by Mary’s presence as she joined us for our lunch.
A glorious day for our match at Piltdown. All agreed the course was looking great, and the greens were as good as any we had played on this year. We played a 12 a side foursomes match, although sadly one of the Martlets had to withdraw late due to illness. Our strong first pair Ronni Schrevel (playing off 3) and Mark Stevenson set the tone with a 6 and 5 win. Our second pair were reduced to one, Dan Jackson, who gamely won his game on his own. Sadly in overall match terms the Martlets had to forfeit a foursomes game. Adrian White and Charlie Hartridge won a hard fought match, but while Michael Phillipps and Paul Yule were able to halve their match, our final two pairs, Nik Mehta and Simon Flind, and Gregory West and Mike Stewart, went down to the Purchasers. So overall the match was won 3.5/2.5 by The Purchasers. Mary Whitty gave a moving and detailed account of Ham’s sporting life, mainly devoted to cricket and golf.
