Match Report

MARTLETS C C v SEAFORD COLLEGE AT SEAFORD COLLEGE ON 7 th JUNE 2022

Not the ideal day to be a match manager, the Diamond Jubilee and double bank holiday and how not to raise a side on a damp Tuesday. Massive thanks must go to Paul Walker who dragged the MM out of his quagmire of depression and somehow managed to get a semblance of a team to represent the Sussex Martlets against Seaford College.

Here is the report of the match kindly worded by Les who stuck it out in the endless drizzle of that day.

Due to inclement weather lunch was taken early, a toss was taken and Martlets batted, in a game which was reduced to 35 overs per side.
Luke Forster and Tom Drake- Brockman opened for the Martlets, the pair put on an opening partnership of 52 before Foster was dismissed in the thirteenth over, adjudged caught by wicket keeper Hodgson for 25 off the bowling of Ashbury.
Alex Heasman came in at number three, and together with Drake-Brockman took the score to 116 in the twenty first over, at which point Heasman was bowled by Foster for an enterprising 22. Drake-Brockman had moved watchfully to 60.
Toby Toft and Drake-Brockman accelerated the score to 188 before Drake-Brockman having moved on to 102 (11 fours and five sixes) from 82 balls, was retired out.
Toft (39 not out) and Maine (1 not out) took the total to 204 -3 from 32 overs, before the rain became too hard and the players came off, the conditions causing the game to be abandoned.
It must be noted that the College played with incredible fortitude and passion and must be credited with carrying on in the wet and even wetter conditions.
As always the College supplied us with welcoming drinks on arrival and seemingly endless sustenance for the time we were there.
A farewell beer ended the day at the local hostelry aptly called The Cricketers.
