The Sussex Martlets gathered under the South Downs south of Petworth at Seaford College to play their first XI now ably led by Cricket Master Chris Adams who, of course, was the former captain of Sussex CCC.
The Martlets had the feel of a scratch side about them, but stalwarts Will “the farmer” Rydon and Paul “the barrister” Walker stood tall in Club colours to meet the challenge from Seaford College. The Martlet’s side was bolstered by our 2017 overseas signing from South Africa, a young gentlemen called Jano Moller who had travelled from Pevensey for this match.
As is tradition, the Martlets batted first and it has to be acknowledged that on this day, they were totally reliant on Jano Moller who scored a magnificent 98 and was ably supported by Paul Walker, no doubt reminiscing about his innings in Jersey several years back where he scored next to no runs whilst batting for over two hours. The Martlets were all out for 156 runs.
Seaford College made short work of the run chase, with their captain H Bennett scoring a solid 51 and Isaac Thorneley scoring 58. The Martlets were soon put to the sword by a young and enthusiastic side who scored 160-8 to take the honours.
The Martlets retired to the Cricketers to lick their wounds and contemplate how it must feel to win a game of cricket.
