On a most pleasant October morning the Martlets travelled to Rye G.C. in East Sussex with great anticipation of a competitive day’s golf, a super lunch and a warm welcome from Rye’s most hospitable members. Upon arrival we were blessed with Rye G.C. presented in its finest on a bright and unusually calm Autumn day, which probably favoured the Martlets on a usually windy and very challenging seaside links.
The Martlets team for this year’s fixture was particularly competitive and balanced across the handicap range. This made for an easy selection and pairing process for the new match manager Robert Forster. The morning pairings were particularly competitive with three single figure handicap pairings and three mid handicap pairing. Resulting in 4 wins to 2 losses at lunch, much to the surprise of the Rye team.
After a most convivial and traditional Rye lunch, the Martlet pairings were mixed up, putting low with mid handicaps which again resulted in 4 wins to 2 losses for the afternoon result, thus giving the Martlets an excellent if a little unexpected 8 – 4 win for the day.
Special mention must go to James Goddard, Julian Hunt & our new member Allan Gormley for winning their matches both morning and afternoon against a competitive Rye team. We look forward to returning in 2016 when we expect that Rye G.C. will field a stronger team.
