Sunday 11th of October was the Martlets first match of 2020 due to Covid restrictions causing our host clubs to cancel all of our previously arranged fixtures.
After a wet few weeks, the sun shone on the links at Rye and the Martlets team of 8 who came to play in the match. The course was in fine shape after the recent rains which presented much greener fairways than one might see at Rye after a warm summer.
Patrick Hole, Rye’s match manager had assembled a good team who played well over the morning 18 holes and went in to lunch 3:1 ahead. Martlets’ one point came from Julian Hunt & Nigel Cook. Lunch, was very convivial and the Martlets weathered the wine less well than the Rye team except for two pairings Stuart Ritchie and Robert Forster who won their match on the last putt of the game on the 18th green watched by both Martlets and Rye Members from the terrace. The ½ point came from Simon Ballie-Hamilton and Mike Stewart, to bring the match result to 5 ½ to 2 ½ to Rye.
The 2021 fixture is set for Sunday 3rd October when we hope to take a strong side to Rye to stop them making it 5 wins in a row.
