Sussex Martlets v Rye G.C.
2018 Match Report
On a warm and slightly humid Sunday morning the Martlets arrived at Rye G.C. for the annual fixture, keen to avenge last year’s defeat. Having assembled a strong and balanced Martlets team with handicaps ranging from 4 to 17 Robert Forster the match manager was feeling positive of a win for the Martlets.
We started with all good intentions and as the weather improved in the morning sadly the Martlets golf did not! The morning result was a disappointing 5 and a half to 2 and a half to Rye. The successful morning pairings were Nigel Cook and Adrian White with a very creditable win, shaking hands on the 10th green; Allan Gormley and Robert Forster who won 3 & 2 and a half point from Simon Ballie Hamilton & Mike White. Thanks goes to Peter Baxter who played on his own as our 16th player was unable to make it at the last minute.
Not deterred we set about ensuring the Rye team members had a good lunch with a generous supply of wine and then we plied them with Kummels, sadly this did not have the desired effect in upsetting the Rye members equilibrium for the afternoon round, as Rye won the afternoon round by the same margin and took the match 11:5.
The Martlets pairings who brought home the two and a half points were Ben Burrows & Steve Pook who won their match 1 up Robert Forster playing on his own who won 2 & 1 and Allan Gormley and William Forster who bagged a half.
Looking back on the day it was pleasing to note that Allan Gormley having won in the morning and secured a half in the afternoon is still undefeated in all of the matches he has played in since he joined the Golf society three or so years ago.
We look forward to returning to Rye in 2019 with the intention of securing a win.
