It was a sunny, but chilly and windy, April morning when eight Martlets, a reduced number due to Covid restrictions, took on Royal Ashdown Forest.
It was the Martlets first game of the season so there was some concern as to how lockdown training had been going and the form of the team! However, from the moment Mark Stevenson found the middle of the fairway with his first drive optimism spread through the team. Mark and his partner Julian Hunt, playing off a handicap of 1, had a very tight game with never more than a hole in it but it was the Ashdown pair who cracked on the 18th to give the Martlets their first point.
In the second match, a devastating display of putting and chipping by James Goddard, holing at least four long putts, brought him and his partner Peter Scaramanga safely home. Martlets Golf Hon Sec golf Robert Forster, playing with his predecessor Adrian White, lost a tight match on the 18th but the big hitting pair of Simon Baillie Hamilton and Stuart Ritchie scored a decisive win in the final game.
A few pints of Haveys and an excellent lunch were consumed on the club house balcony – although it did get a bit cold with the Easterly wind. The afternoon golf was deemed as optional and some of the hardier Martlets went out to play again and celebrate the team’s 3-1 win!
