Match Report
| On a bright Spring Day, 16 Martlet golfers met on the sun-drenched balcony of Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club. Coffee, tea and bacon rolls were devoured to provide strength for the battle ahead.
The Old Course was in excellent condition with the greens true and the heather ferocious. Royal Ashdown President Paul Champness and Martlet non- playing manager Peter Scaramanga manned the drinks buggy dispensing Pimm’s, beers and other goodies halfway round. At lunch, the Martlets Cricket Chairman David Whelpton joined the throng, and speeches were made giving tribute to Tony Pigott, the Sussex and England cricketer and occasional Martlet. Tony had been Royal Ashdown match manager until his untimely death earlier in the year. On the golf front, plaudits to the Forster father (Robert) and son (Will) ably supported by partners Neil Lancaster and Simon Baillie -Hamilton who secured points as did 2025 Martlet Golfer of the Year Stuart Avern supported by Mark Stevenson. However, when the scores were all added up, the Martlets had just lost by 3-5. A close call and a very enjoyable day overall. Peter Scaramanga: Match Manager |
