Sussex Martlets 171 – 9
Newick 170 – 5
A very enjoyable game against a youthful Newick side that ebbed and flowed, ending in a nail biting finish.
Martlets won the toss and opted to bat on a "sporty" wicket. Wickets fell all too often bar a great partnership of 64 between Zubin Bhettay (who top scored with 35) and Stuart Ritchie (27). The Martlets were saved by a great rear-guard spearheaded by Derek Horsham (25*) and were relieved to reach 171 – 9 declared from 40 overs. The bowling hero for Newick was 17 year old Johnny Barnes with 5 – 20 from 7 overs.
After a trademark Newick tea with innumerable home-made cakes the Martlets started surprisingly well, reducing Newick to 18 – 4 and then 57 – 5. Derek Horsham took 2 – 8. The same Johnny Barnes who’d terrorised the Martlets with the ball carried his bat for 59; at the other end 16 year old Scott Warren smahsed a maiden 50 in a partnership of 105. Newick needed 19 to win from the final 2 overs. Matt Stone held his nerve for the Martlets bowling a dot ball on the final delivery with only 2 required.
