An excellent and close-fought match. It was a workmanlike batting performance from the Martlets, with contributions and cameos throughout the order, stitched together by an uncharacteristically restrained 50 from Shomit Dutta opening, and rounded off with a crucial last-wicket partnership from the Walker ‘brothers’ getting us to a level-par 260. Spearhead Tony Alexander, St James’s overseas player this year, was an irrepressible guest performer in all facets of the game and, together with some thoughtful spin bowling, he took us to victory with two balls to spare, his inswinger bursting through the defence of the Rovers’ no.11. Rovers had been chasing victory and were in it until the fall of the eighth wicket. Joyous scenes all round
