Sussex Martets – 151 all out

Heavy rain the night before meant a damp pitch and outfield.

SM lost the toss and were asked to bat.

A very slow, sticky pitch and straight bowling meant a sluggish start and ten overs passed before a boundary was scored. Both openers struggled initially. Kevin Smith showed his class and looked more comfortable before being well caught driving. (30 off 66 balls). John Ashworth contributed with a good 24 and Alan Newman scored a confident 36 but no-one managed to go on to get a big score and with time running out the innings fizzled out as the tail attempted to force up the total. We’d aimed to set a target of at least 180 but were short with 151 from 49 overs. P Wilmer for Goodwood took 4 – 23 and Mayne 3 – 30

Lamb bowled an excellent 12 over spell and deserved more than his 1 -46. John Clifton of Goodwood was only on 4 when he top-edged a ball from Hough into his eye. He retired hurt and received hospital treatment overnight – it is hoped that the damage to his eye is not permanent.

Unfortunately, on a now sunny afternoon and drying pitch 150 was not going to be enough and despite their best efforts the Martlets were unable to exert any real pressure and although a couple of wickets were taken, Goodwood cruised comfortably to victory with skipper Miles contributing 43 and Gammon T, scoring 57 off 66 balls. Stuart Ritchie did a fine job behind the stumps and got a catch and a lightning quick stumping too.

As always a friendly, competitive fixture – but as a team we failed to perform to our potential. Roll on next season and let’s see the Martlets win the toss for a change!!
