Match Report

The fourth staging of the match against East Brighton was, by several measures, a hugely successful and enjoyable day (or at least no-one told me anything to the contrary).

As in the previous three years, we had clear-blue skies and sun-kissed fairways. Unusually for East Brighton, there was barely a breeze – perfect conditions for low scoring.

The match result produced a first: the five fourball, better-ball matches resulting in a win for Sussex Martlets 3 ½ to 1 ½

Previous results were 2 ½-2 ½ (2024), ½-4 ½ (2-23) and 1 ½-3 ½ (2022)

Highlights included myself (Steve Hartridge (10.6) and Stuart Ritchie (17) beating the EBGC pairing of (current club chairman)Chris Bryan (10.9) and Al Gunn (14.8) 7&6.

The two Martlets dovetailed perfectly, got off to a fast start and were never behind in a match that was wrapped up on the 12th hole.

Gary Barnett (14) was once again in a winning combination (he has only ever lost one match in three years for the Martlets) this time teaming up with Stuart Avern (16.1) and shooting an “estimated” 78 in beating EBGC stalwarts Stuart May (12.6) and Pete Durgerian (16.6) 4&3.

Steve Pook (4.3) and Simon Baillie-Hamilton(13.9) came through a tight match of high-quality gainst EBGC former-captain and now a Martlet Neil Lancaster (6.9) and Neville Pascal (12.2) 2&1. The winning pair registered 4 birdies along the way.

Tim Smeath (18.2) and Gregory West (21) battled all the way to the last putt, ensuring a halved match against Hamish Stewart (13.3) and Mike Kennedy (21.3) AS.

Michael Phillips (16.7) and Nigel Cook (17) found the handicap difference too great against notorious serial winner at EBGC, Raffaello Cowan-Boscardi, (17.2) and Mark Neary (28.7), going down 4&3.

Six nearest the pin prizes (the five par 3s and nearest the pin in two shots on the par-our 13th) were on offer, with the “nearest of the nearest” getting first pick of prizes, the second closest getting the second pick, and so on.). The awards included a mix of wine, whisky, rum, and a cheese and wine tasting experience for two at a leading Sussex wine estate.

Stuart Ritchie won two of these and the other successful nearest-the-pin Martlet was Steve Pook.

The day wrapped up around 19.30, with departing complementary comments and a promise among many to do it all again in 2026.

Cheers

Steve Hartridge – Match Manager
