Sussex Martlets 183-9 dec (W.Rydon 44*, James Fitt 5-19)
Cuckfield 187-4 (M. Hough 82* , A. Middleton 63 )
The Martlets after wining the toss and electing to bat recovered from120-9 to post 183 – 9 from 45 overs whic Cuckfield successfully chased down winning by 6 wickets.
An enjoyable afternoon of cricket. With an age range of 77 to 12, it showed what wonderful game cricket is with a result off the penultimate ball.
With hindsight the novice captain was hoodwinked into batting first. A good start by the openers followed by a tumultuous middle order collapse was saved by two old pros at the rear which allowed a sporting declaration and target for the opposition of 183 for 9.
An early wicket smashing spell of Rob Rydon gave the team hope – false as it turned out – and then a steady accumulation of runs by the Cuckfield captain. Paul Walker produced a fine spell of offspin which could have yielded so much more if assertive catch calling had prevailed.
Cuckfield were always in charge of the run chase, but with two members over 30 and the rest under 20 their tail was vulnerable and if only our catches had been taken I feel the result would have been different
