Match Report

Sussex Martlets 152 – 9

Christ’s Hospital 147 – 9

The Martlets gathered at Christ’s Hospital for their fixture against the 1st XI to find the weather against the fixture. After an early lunch and some serious persuading of the umpires not to abandon the fixture, a 30 overs match got underway at 2.45pm.

Brooks DG, Sussex CCC chief executive, troubled the scorers little whilst Loveday MJ accumulated runs steadily but rather more slowly than Oates JM who exploded into action showing the remnants of his youth. Wingfield-Digby WH had useful knock to close the Martlets innings on 152-9.

Christ’s Hospital started slowly under the bowling of Smith DT, Oates JM and Davies AH. Brooks DG came into his own going for 25 runs in three overs but securing the vital wicket of Whttingham S, his surprise at receiving a ball floating out of the upper atmosphere was palpable. An excellent four over spell from Wingfield-Digby WH produced 4 wickets including a sharp runout effected by the Martlets captain Ritchie SD resulted in all results being possible going into the final over with Christ’s Hospital needing 17 runs to win.

Oates JM bowled and went for a one bounce four, but then a single and three dot balls dashed any hopes of a win by Christ’s Hospital. With nothing to lose, O’Boyle M struck a magnificent six off the last ball over mid wicket to take Christ’s Hospital to 147-9 in their 30 overs.

An excellent days cricket was salvaged from indifferent weather and Christ’s Hospital showed great spirit with bat and ball as well as being generous hosts for this fixture.
