Sussex Martlets CC v Butterflies (40 overs per side)

Butterflies XI – 86 all out in 30 overs (Jack Baldwin 3 for 15)
In conditions that were sadly typical of this summer’s weekends, The Martlets were indebted to Hurstpierpoint College’s ground staff for getting this game on, overnight rain necessitating the use of leaf blowers to dry some wet areas of the square. Something else that became a feature of the summer was having to find a last-minute replacement due to a positive COVID test in the household, necessitating a scramble on the morning of the game to find a replacement for our erstwhile Chairman.
A delayed start 40-overs-a-side was agreed by the two captains, and the Martlets batted first. There were contributions all down the order, but it was Jordan Shaw’s unbeaten 106 and Joe Waylett’s 52 that were the mainstays of our imposing total of 254-5. This was always going to prove challenging to a game but mixed-strength Butterflies side, and their task was made even harder when left-arm seamer Jack Baldwin heeded his skipper’s advice to bowl straight and removed the visitors’ top 3 bowled or LBW with just 30 runs on the board. Mark Trubshaw and Tayyab Mahmood kept the pressure on with 2 wickets apiece, and Ashers joined in with a tasty spell to get rid of the Butterflies top scorer. The skipper brought himself on at the end to have a bowl at a former teammate from university for old times’ sake, and definitely not just to help himself to a couple of tail-end wickets! The Butterflies were bowled out for 86 with 10 overs to spare.
