Match Report
| As seems to inevitably be the case, the Sussex Martlets were defeated in their annual match at Crowborough Beacon, this year by five and half matches to one half. As observed by Match Manager Nigel Cook at lunch, home advantage seems to count far more at Crowborough Beacon than elsewhere on our circuit.
Congratulations must go to new recruit Bruce French and “old hand” Andy Rogers for saving the Martlets from a whitewash. In fact, they were unfortunate not to get a full point, being one up standing on the eighteenth tee before losing to a birdie, a rare event given how difficult it is even to get a par on this closing hole. The difficulty in securing points was most notably observed in the first match on the course, where Nigel Cook and Mark Stevenson held out valiantly before defeat came on the sixteenth. Given Mark was conceding twelve shots to both of their opponents this was a remarkably game effort, especially as the Martlets Hon. Secretary was on hand at the start to witness one of said opponents thunder a monstrous drive down the middle of the first fairway! The match was as always played in the right spirit and, indeed, several of SMGS have been invited back for informal re-matches. Nigel Cook: Match Manager |
