Match Report
| On a perfect morning at Piltdown Golf Club, the Sussex Martlets narrowly prevailed over The Purchasers to retain the Ham Whitty trophy.
Match Manager Mark Stevenson led from the front in the first match with a superb exhibition of golf, shouldering with ease the burden of being partnered by the Hon. Secretary to set the Martlets on their way. Single-figure pairing Stewart Tippler and Hamish Middleton then consolidated the Martlet lead in match two. Starting on the seventeenth, new recruit Bruce French, partnered by David Heine, found the demands of the Piltdown heather just too much, allowing The Purchasers their first victory. The contest was sealed with a comfortable success by Charlie Hartridge and Neil Lancaster who both played very good golf. The consolation win in the bottom match for The Purchaser pair did not, therefore, have any bearing on the outcome. After an excellent lunch as always in the intimate setting of the Piltdown dining room, Mary Whitty graciously presented Mark with the trophy played in her late husband’s honour. Greg West: Hon.
