Match v West Sussex Golf Club

Match Report 

This year’s West Sussex match, which increasingly has the feel of an intra-society fixture, was, as ever, hard fought but played in great spirits. The Martlets went down 9 to 6 with some very close matches, and some less so. This despite the team being propped up by the talents of Stuart Ritchie who had 2 wins from 2 on the day.

A 30 foot put on the 18^th by Richard Foster brought a late win against their Captain in the morning, and at lunch the ‘visitors’ held a narrow 4 ½ v 3 ½  lead.

With the usual kummel and claret mix over lunch to fuel our afternoon round, we de-colared and went out again to secure the silverware. Unfortunately, it became clear that WS’s excellent hospitality over lunch was just a rouse to soften us up for the second 18 of the day. Their revival was immediate and unrelenting, winning 4 of the 7 afternoon matches, leaving the Martlets to figure out where the team went wrong.

Could it have been the early season’s true but tricky greens, or maybe the light easterly breeze, or the narrowing daylight from the newly changed fixture date and time. Or,more likely, perhaps poor team selection by the match manager. As the post-match beers flowed and the discussions got increasingly honest, a general consensus was reached, that we were simply outplayed by our good friends at West Sussex once again!
