Match Report

MCC 141 all out, Stuart Hall 3 – 16

Sussex Martlets 142 – 7, Phillip Ellwood 31

On a sunny and cool day at the Castle after the previous day’s and early morning rain the Castle was looking as splendid as ever for the start of play. With two teams ready to do battle the MCC won the toss and elected to bat. Mike Harrison and Nick Creed reduced the MCC to 39 for 4 with two wickets a piece. Nick bowled particularly well breaking the middle stump with an unplayable delivery to dismiss Joe Porter, ex-Surrey CCC. The MCC rallied before lunch but unfortunately lost quick and important wickets shortly afterwards. Stuart Hall bowled very well to end the innings with 3 for 19 off 6 overs. At the lunch break the Chairman, Nigel Russell, gave a brief speech about Jeremy Blanchard, a vice-president, who sadly passed away in the morning. A brief silence was held by both teams in his honour.

In reply to the 141 set the Martlets eventually coasted home but not without losing regular wickets along the way. Phillip Ellwood top scored with 31. Thank you to both sides for a great game and we look forward to another 100 years of this fixture at what is without doubt the most wonderful ground to play cricket at in the country! MH
